The pros of diet soda

I love Diet Coke. In fact, I’m drinking one right now.  I REALLY love Diet Dr. Pepper, that’s my all time favorite drink, but my local gas station only has diet Pepsi and Coke, so I drink a diet coke almost every day.  Occasionally I even have 2 of them.  And when I say 1 or 2, I’m not talking cans, I’m talking “Double Gulps”, which I believe are 44 (correct me if I’m wrong) ounce  buckets of artificially sweetened goodness.

Some people say that if you are going to drink soda (which is supposed to be soooo bad for you) then why not go all the way and drink regular soda instead of diet?  I say to those people, HELL-OOO!  Diet soda has 0 calories.  And I mean zero!  Did you hear me? NONE!  I can drink all the flippin’ soda I want and never ruin my diet.  (Not that I am on a “diet” per se, but I do count my calories to lose weight).  A 12 ounce can of regular soda-ONE CAN mind you- has about 150 calories. That’s more calories than my entire lunch yesterday, which was cabbage soup (it actually tastes a lot better than it sounds).  That’s almost as many calories as are in a chocolate dipped cone at McDonald’s.  I’d rather have the cone.  If I were to drink a “Double Gulp” of regular soda, I would be consuming 550 non-nutritive calories. that’s more than a third of my allotted calories for the whole day, and it’s not even food!

Don’t tell me about all the research done on artificial sweeteners and how they cause cancer and contribute to depression and blah blah blah.  At this point in my life I am way more concerned about my risk of heart disease than my risk of cancer. Obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and gout run in my family and if I don’t take control of my weight, I am going to die early.  And as for depression, I already have it so whatever.

So why drink soda at all? Why not just drink water? First off, I drink plenty of water.  Soda dehydrates you which causes your lips to get chapped, and soda doesn’t carry fat from your body like water does.  So  I make sure I get way more than 8 glasses a day (to make up for the soda I’m drinking and the exercise I do).  So, between all that soda and water I must be peeing ALL the time, right? Well, yeah.  But it’s worth it.  And the reason is that it tastes so good.  When you are counting your calories you’ll take any good tasting thing you can get.  It gives me something to sip when I have the munchies that tastes yummy and doesn’t use up any of my precious calories. And I’ve HEARD (don’t quote me on this) that caffeine suppresses your appetite.  Not mine, because my appetite is insatiable.  But it does help to stave off those killer munchies.  So the next time you feel like knocking us Dietsodaholics, just remember that we might be saving ourselves from imminent obesity-related death! How’s that for an argument in favor of diet soda?

  1. I had roomates who needed a large (very large) sized drink of Dr Pepper or was it Pepsi? Anyways, they drank it every day, all day. Don’t even remember if it was diet or not. Anyways, I love posts like these Crystal. I love reading people’s opinions. I grew up playing sports and the ONLY thing that took my thirst away was good ‘ol WATER. I’m now hardwired to drink it and I LOVE it. My kids will go to parties and ask for water. NOT THAT I PUSH IT ON THEM because I’m just not about pushing stuff on my kids, but it’s pretty much all we have at home. Sodas and other drinks are treats here in this house of poorness.
Anyways, enjoy what you enjoy. That’s my motto. Life’s meant to be enjoyed and I enjoy water! 😉

  2. LOL is this inspired by my post on Lauren’s wall? I can certainly see your point of view about the diet soda. Since I am on day 5 of no soda, I am desperately wanting one so very badly. But I figure I need to quit all soda because I am not a heavy water drinker, and I need to focus on the water for now. If I let myself have anything else, I wont drink any water at all. Love your bloggin Crystal. You remind me so much of me. 😀 lol

  3. I don’t know about where you stay, but here is South Africa it is very common to see heavily “rounded” people walking around with a burger in one hand and a diet soda in the other.

Always good for a giggle, but you have made a good point. By drinking the diet soda, you can eat your burger guilt free. Thanks!
